Rangers have made an offer for Oldham defender George Edmundson, according to Football Insider.

The report claims that League One side Peterborough have also made a formal offer for the 6ft 3in centre-back.

Edmundson has one year left on his contract and Oldham are said to want a significant fee for one of their best assets.

The centre-back has had a standout season, making 54 appearances across all competitions, and was named as part of the League Two Team of the Year.

A good move for Rangers?

They need a new centre-back with Joe Worrall heading back to Nottingham Forest and a permanent deal for a rising star like Edmundson makes a lot of sense. Oldham might be holding out for a big fee but Edmundson only has a year left on his contract and the money involved to land him would fit in with Rangers and their want to rely less on loans. He’s said to be one of the best young centre-backs in the lower leagues and that’s exactly the sort of target that Rangers should be after.

Likely to happen?

Rangers are a very attractive club to play for at the moment. Steven Gerrard has made a big impact and there’s a feeling that his second season in charge could finally bring silverware back to Ibrox. If it’s a straight fight between Rangers and League One Peterborough then surely it’s a no-brainer for Edmundson to head north of the border. Connor Goldson made the move last summer and he came from a bigger club and with a bigger reputation. We think this one could have legs.
