Rangers defender Connor Goldson has revealed that he wants Steven Gerrard’s side to be challenging to win trophies next season.

Rangers have made progress this season in Steven Gerrard’s first year in charge at Ibrox, with the club set to finish second in the SPFL table ahead of Aberdeen who have finished above them the last few campaigns, but they have failed to secure any trophies this term.

Goldson has suggested that the next objective for Rangers should be to make sure they start picking up domestic silverware, and believes everyone at the club needs to ready to make sure that happens.

“You look at last Sunday, the Old Firm win, and the fans cheering after the game. We actually said to each other after the game: ‘Can you imagine what it would be like if we actually do go and win something?’ Imagine what the fans would be like then,” Goldson told the Sunday Post.

“So that’s our next aim. It’s what we need to push for. I think we’ve all thought what it might be like to win a title. I don’t think we will know until we’ve done it. But I feel that the boys who’ve been here before, and know what it’s like, will drive this changing room on to go and compete.

“They know what this club wants and what is expected of them. But we know it has to be a team effort. It has to be a whole club effort.”

OPINION

Goldson’s comments about his desire to see Rangers once again lift some major domestic silverware next season will resonate with the Glasgow club’s supporters. The defender is right to suggest that after a season where Rangers have made some progress under Gerrard they must now begin to target winning the SPFL title and other domestic competitions next term. As the former Brighton defender acknowledges that will not be an easy task, but with Celtic’s managerial position unclear at the moment there could be an opportunity for Rangers, who now have some stability under Gerrard, to take advantage and close the gap on their rivals. That is what Gerrard was tasked with when he took charge at Ibrox, and that will remain ever more the aim next season. Goldson is right to suggest that if the club can unite and pull together they will have the opportunity to challenge for trophies next season.
