Dundee United manager Robbie Neilson has admitted that rumours linking his side to a swoop for Rangers man Lee Wallace were news to him.

The 31-year-old is out of contract at Ibrox in the summer, and is expected to move on at the end of the season.

The Daily Record suggested yesterday that the Scottish Championship side are interested in bringing him in, but Neilson has quelled the rumours.

Speaking on BBC Sportsound, as quoted by the Scottish Sun, he said: “I saw that this morning. I know Lee well from my time at Hearts. He’s a very good player.

“I’m sure Lee will have a lot of options. Whether it be Scotland, England or abroad.”

OPINION

This just goes to show how wildly the rumour mill can get it wrong sometimes. When a story like this pops up, and a manager is left bemused as to where a link came from, you are left wondering what on earth the actual source is, or if it is purely fabricated. That being said, if Neilson were interested in Wallace, would he actually admit it? Maybe not. Because of the way that transfers are hyped up and reported on, it is only natural that managers wish to play their cards close to their chest whenever they can. Ultimately, however, if Neilson says he isn’t keen, then that has to be taken as the truth until it is proven otherwise. At the very least. You would have to say that Wallace will have no end of clubs looking to bring him in, and no matter where he ends up, he will leave Ibrox as a loyal servant remembered fondly by the Gers faithful.
