Ally McCoist has rubbished a claim from former Rangers manager Mark Warburton that the Gers should give Celtic a guard of honour in the Old Firm clash on Sunday.

Talking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast Show (talkSPORT, Friday, 9.50am), McCoist added, ‘Only in Scotland could you get in a tizz about a guard of honour”.

Warburton had previously talked to talkSPORT ahead of the Old Firm clash and said, “I think Rangers should absolutely give Celtic a guard of honour on Sunday.

“I understand you’ve got your rivals coming to Ibrox and I understand the sentiment. However, Rangers have always been a class club and it would have been a lovely touch to give a guard of honour.

“For me, I would love to see a guard of honour on Sunday.”

Brazil said he applauded Warburton. However, McCoist wasn’t having any of it and said, “Warburton is clearly not thinking straight over this… Can you imagine? Seriously, only in Scotland could we get in a tizz about a guard of honour.”

OPINION

Would it be a classy gesture? Of course. Is there any obligation to do it? None whatsoever, and after the last Old Firm clash it’s absolutely no surprise that Rangers aren’t going to give Celtic a guard of honour. The relationship between the two sides is about as bad as it’s been and we can’t see the Rangers players being at all happy if Steven Gerrard had made the call to honour Celtic as champions. Celtic might have won the title but there’s still a very competitive game of football to be played on Sunday and it won’t be a friendly. Rangers will be looking to finish on a high after a season that hasn’t delivered exactly what fans were hoping for. They beat Celtic comprehensively in the last Old Firm game at Ibrox, though, and another win on Sunday would be massive for Rangers. None of them will want to see a guard of honour, no-matter how classy a gesture it is.
