Former Rangers assistant manager Archie Knox has revealed what it will take to stop Celtic from winning their ninth consecutive Scottish Premier League title.

Knox believes that it will all come down to their recruitment plan to stop their arch rivals from beating a record set by Rangers in 1997 under Walter Smith.

Speaking to the BBC, Knox said: “The recruitment will decide. Somehow their recruitment has got to be really top notch. No matter when the first Old Firm game is, they have to be winning games.”

Rangers enjoyed success in their first season under Steven Gerrard and made Celtic wait until the final three games for them to secure the title after winning in both Old Firm games at Ibrox.

They have identified numerous targets early on in the this transfer window with the club already reported by the Daily Record to have had two bids turned down for Oldham’s George Edmundson.

OPINION

Whether they like it or not, Rangers must listen to this advice as money could possibly be the only way they can cut the gap to their biggest rivals who have been untouchable for many years. Steven Gerrard was backed by his employers in his first year and he delivered by closing the gap slightly compared to years before. The former Liverpool man demonstrated if given the right tools, he can dismantle Celtic, who couldn’t handle this Light Blues in their games at Ibrox. The downfall of his side was dropping too many points against teams below them in the league. The way to stop this would be too improve his squad but he can’t just bring in anyone. Gerrard must make marquee signings, the sort of players that Celtic would be interested in – if he can do this, he will keep being able to prove to other big performers that Rangers is the team to be at in Scotland. Knox is right – the only way to beat them is to join them and if they do, the Gers could be well on their way back to success.
