Rangers defender James Tavernier has said that his side “are definitely there” in terms of matching champions Celtic following the Gers 2-0 win in the Old Firm at Ibrox yesterday afternoon, but that lack of consistency cost them the title.

Goals from Tavernier and Scott Arfield helped Rangers beat Celtic for a second-time at Ibrox this season and the defender insists that his side have now showcased that they are able to compete with the Bhoys.

“How far away are we from a title challenge? I think we are definitely there. We have gone toe-to-toe with Celtic, who have deserved to win the league,” As quoted in The Daily Record.

“That is down to us and our lack of consistency, but we feel we have the team and the manager is going to strengthen in the summer. We are in a good position.

“The gap was too big for us in the end and it was only our fault it became that size,”

OPINION

There are definite signs of positivity at Ibrox. Steven Gerrard’s men have beaten the old enemy twice on home turf this season and this should really give them the belief that they can become even more serious about their title push next season. The Gers were deserved winner during the 2-0 win yesterday and while some may suggest that Celtic were in second gear given that they have already won the league, no player is ever in second gear in a game of that magnitude. Rangers were simply better than Celtic and the win will give them a mental boost going forwards. Steven Gerrard must add to his squad in the summer in order to help bridge the gap, another four solid additions would make an enormous difference – Rangers are only six points off the top despite losing the title. Celtic are yet to appoint a permanent manager and with so much uncertainty, Rangers will be looking to capitalise.
