Rangers centre-back Connor Goldson has highlighted the importance of the “massive summer” Rangers face if they are to challenge for silverware this season.

While the appointment of Steven Gerrard at the Ibrox helm has seen the Gers massively improve, the club will end the season without silverware while city rivals Celtic aim to complete a historic ‘treble treble’.

Goldson stressed that not only must the right players be brought in over the summer, but the squad must work together with a solid pre-season before thinking about next term.

“We know that, at this club, success is in the DNA,” the 26-year-old said to the Evening Times.

“Everyone here expects us to win trophies and be successful, so we’ve had a season where we feel as though we have progressed from where we were last year, but at the same time, we haven’t won anything.

“We know players have to be brought in that are quality to bring us up to scratch to winning trophies. When you don’t win a trophy at a club like this, I feel as if you have failed. Yes we have progressed and don’t think anyone can you otherwise. Every step we have progressed, but we haven’t won anything.

“I feel this is now a massive summer for the football club to go and get the right players, have a pre-season with all of us and it’ll be a second year for a lot of us.”

OPINION

While Goldson is critical of Rangers’ failure to pick up silverware this season, he should keep in mind a few things: It was always going to be hugely difficult, if not impossible, to stop Celtic’s domination of Scottish football in one season, since the Hoops players have always had the allure of completing the ‘treble treble’ in their minds this season and have zoned in on achieving it. Secondly, this is a squad with fairly new signings and a fairly new manager that will take time to gel. Of course at a club like Rangers fans are going to expect silverware within one season, but this is going to take time. The most important thing for Rangers to do now is forget about the failure of winning trophies this season and sign new players, gelling the team together further and creating a stronger base for pipping their city neighbours to silverware next season.
