Rangers target George Edmundson has turned down a new contract at Oldham Athletic, according to the Express.

The 21-year-old was the subject of a bid from the Gers earlier in the week, as reported by the Oldham Chronicle, but the approach was turned down by the Latics.

It is understood, however, that the League Two side would be willing to listen to improved offers from Edmundson.

And the likelihood of him leaving looks to have been ramped up by the suggestion that he has knocked back a long term deal with improved terms at Boundary Park.

OPINION

This could be a real development for Rangers. You get the impression that the Gers’ first bid was always something of a sighter, and having had that knocked back, you would be surprised if they didn’t now step on and look to make another approach for the defender this summer. Knowing that he has turned down a contract, and that he is probably looking for a way out of the club, can only be good news for Rangers, and will almost certainly tempt the Gers to have another go. Edmundson would be a fine addition at Ibrox, and exactly the kind of signing that Steven Gerrard should be looking to make. Young, promising, relatively cheap, he ticks all the boxes for the Gers, and if he can be brought in this summer, he could go on to become a real favourite in the blue half of Glasgow. This latest development will give Rangers a lot of hope.
