James Tavernier inspired Rangers to a 2-0 win over rivals Celtic at Ibrox on Sunday, scoring after just two minutes direct from a free-kick and helping his side to keep a clean sheet.

After the game he tweeted, “So proud of all the lads. Glasgow is Blue” but former Celtic striker Amido Balde wasn’t about to let that lie.

He dismantled Tavernier with a sharp response when he said, “Dude, you have been in Scotland five years more than me and you still ain’t won the league. Glasgow is still green and white.”

Balde sent his response on Sunday night and it has since attracted almost 8,000 likes. Most of them from the green and white side of Glasgow.

OPINION

Celtic ended up with the Premiership title – their eighth in a row – while Rangers got the bragging rights in the last Old Firm game of the season. More than that though, it meant the gap at the top of the table was reduced to six points. If Glasgow was Blue on Sunday, then it’s been green and white this season, but this summer is hugely important for Celtic. They need to decide who is going to try and take the team to nine-in-a-row and there are many fans who don’t think Neil Lennon is the man for the job. Sunday’s Old Firm game was just more proof of that for the Lennon detractors. Lennon complained about referee Kevin Clancy after the game saying that Jon Flanagan should have been sent off for a forearm smash on Scott Brown. That’s hard to deny but it’s also tough to question that Celtic were outclassed by Rangers for the second time in a row at Ibrox. They might well have got something out of the game if Rangers had been reduced to 10 men with the score at 1-0, but that’s not really the point. A big rebuild is needed to ensure that Glasgow is green and white next season, too.
