Celtic goalkeeper Scott Bain has said that Rangers’ celebrations after defeating their Old Firm rivals in last weekend’s derby “speaks volumes” about the size of the two clubs.

Goals from James Tavernier and Scott Arfield ensured that Steven Gerrard’s men would end the season with two home victories over their Glasgow neighbours.

Speaking to the Daily Record, Bain, whose side can win the treble treble with victory over Hearts next Saturday, said that the game showed the current difference in ambition of the two clubs.

“It speaks volumes for our team that that’s a team that used to celebrate winning trophies and now are celebrating winning matches against us,” the 27-year-old said.

“The city can be blue for the day. But perspective comes into play the next day and we are going for another cup. You’ve got a team celebrating winning a game against you like they’d won the league.

“It’s perspectives. We’d already won the league and we’re going into the Scottish Cup Final.”

OPINION

This is some swipe from Scott Bain. As he says, you’ve got to put both clubs’ positions into context. Celtic have been dominating Scottish football for years, proven by the fact that they can complete the historic treble treble against Hearts next Saturday. While Celtic are coming to massively significant milestone in their trajectory, Rangers’ trajectory under Gerrard is only just beginning. The have had to rebuild from the bottom with a new manager and a whole host of new players, and it will be another season or two before Gerrard can really bed in his ideas and tactics and – ultimately – Rangers can seriously challenge Celtic again. While they have not finished too far behind Celtic this season, Rangers have to remember that there is still work to be done. Having said that, to take two wins over Celtic at home is a massive achievement, and one which Bain would be foolish to forget.
