When Timothy Weah announced his early exit from Celtic this week it caused a great amount of surprise among the Parkhead faithful.

The loan star, signed from Paris St-Germain in January, had not been a mainstay in the starting XI but had made an impact from the bench and it seemed strange that the Hoops would let him depart just before the season was over – Chris Sutton among those voicing confusion at the decision.

He could well have been used in Sunday’s 2-0 defeat at the hands of fierce rivals Rangers, injecting some pace and attacking edge that the Bhoys, missing star winger James Forrest, were lacking in.

French publication RMC Sport claim that the Glasgow giants did have plans to take him on board for a second temporary spell this summer but that those have been shelved as a result of his early termination,.

With PSG now open to selling him permanently, Premier League outfit Crystal Palace are said to be keen on a deal and if that is the case then there should be some red flags waving at Celtic Park.

Having any top tier English side keen on a player on the Hoops’ books shows that they have a serious talent at their disposal and so the question must be asked as to why exactly Neil Lennon thought it right to let him leave.

Even if he did not want to play him he could have kept him on board until the season was out rather than burning bridges and ruling out pretty much any chance of a return.

Was this poor management? A missed potential? Did Lennon do the right thing?

All questions for the Hoops board to ask and answer themselves – but this could well leave the Bhoys tearing their hair out come summer and beyond.
