Ally McCoist believes that Neil Lennon has done a “brilliant job” and that he deserves the Celtic manager job on a permanent basis.

McCoist was talking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show (talkSPORT, Monday, 7am), after Celtic won the treble-treble on Saturday, beating Hearts 2-1.

“Neil Lennon has come in and done a brilliant job and he deserves backing,” said McCoist. “They’ve been the best team in Scotland by some considerable distance.”

However, McCoist does believe that there is plenty of work to do.

“It’s an absolutely massive, massive summer, for all Scottish clubs, but particularly for Rangers and Celtic. Looking at the Celtic side in the cup final, they need to bring in three or four new players. It’s an interesting summer.”

OPINION

Lennon did what he had to do to stand a chance of getting the manager role on a permanent basis, delivering the league and the cup. However, the way he did it didn’t inspire all Celtic fans and there’s still a lot of resistance to Lennon from the supporters. Some think it’s a step backwards, others don’t think he’s the man to preside over what is set to be a big summer of investment. However, Lennon is bullish about his own record and believes he is the right man to take the club forward. You can’t deny his passion. When the final whistle went on Saturday, Lennon sank to his knees on the touchline like a true fan and that’s got to count for something. He’ll give absolutely everything to Celtic – the question is whether that’s enough and also whether the Celtic hierarchy can find a bigger and better name they can afford who’s willing to come to Scotland. Let’s face it, if Rafa Benitez was available, we’re sure everyone would think he’s a better manager for the job.
