Following Celtic’s 2-0 defeat at Ibrox yesterday afternoon, former Hoops striker Chris Sutton has spoken about the importance of adding to the squad in the summer.

Sutton highlighted that Celtic must add to the solid core of the squad and that chief executive Peter Lawwell must deliver the funds.

“They still have a solid core in Scott Brown, Kieran Tierney, Callum McGregor, James Forrest and Edouard, plus the likes of a fit-again Tom Rogic, Kris Ajer and perhaps even Leigh Griffiths,” Sutton wrote in his column for The Daily Record.

“But Celtic still need two or three defenders, a proper No.9 who can head the ball, a couple of creative players to operate in the wide areas and through the middle.

“It’s a pretty long shopping list and it means that there is no way Peter Lawwell can afford to sit on this pile of money the club keep telling everyone they have,” Sutton added.

“That needs to happen regardless of who is in charge next season.”

OPINION

Celtic must give their new permanent boss the opportunity to bring new players in. Peter Lawwell needs to back the Hoops’ new boss, whoever that may be so that they can move further away from title contenders Rangers. Despite winning the title already, the gap between Celtic and the Gers is just six points and having lost at Ibrox twice this season, it’s vital that the Bhoys make solid additions to the squad. A creative midfield player would be a very welcome addition. Since losing Stuart Armstrong last summer the void has been evident and this should be a big priority for the new boss. Rangers will continue the Gerrard rebuild in the summer so it’s imperative that Celtic do not stand still and rest on their laurels – additions and money needs to be spent to fend off a serious challenge next season.  The warning signs are there, it’s just down to how the Bhoys react in the summer.
