Alan Brazil has said he’s been told that the “Celtic hierarchy” want to install Neil Lennon as the new manager but that a lot of the fan base don’t want him in charge next season.

Lennon’s side finished with a win against Hearts in the final league game of the season on Sunday. Rangers lost meaning the gap ended as nine points between the two sides.

And Lennon can finish on a high with another win against Hearts next week in the cup final.

However, the Celtic manager job is still up in the air with Lennon not sure whether he will be made permanent manager in the summer.

Talking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast Show (talkSPORT, Monday, 7am), the host said, “I’m told the hierarchy want him but that a lot of the fans don’t. And I can’t understand that, he’s got a great record. It’s a puzzle to me.”

OPINION

The problem with Lennon is that he hasn’t come in and impressed since he took over from Brendan Rodgers. Some of the football has been pretty dour and his side haven’t been scoring a lot of goals. However, he has inherited a side with a lot of problems and there’s a good argument that he should get the summer to put his own stamp on the side. This summer is very important though. Despite the nine-point gap, Rangers have closed the gap competitively and they’re strengthening again this summer. Celtic need to rebuild and in terms of transfers it’s the most important summer in years. Is Lennon the right man to get this done? If he messes it up and Rangers push on next season then it could be big trouble, with Champions League qualification so important for Celtic. It’s a real conundrum although if Brazil is correct, the hierarchy have made their mind up. How much will they listen to the fans in the summer? That’s the big question. Picking the wrong manager would be a big error but one that could blow up if the fans were against it.
