Birmingham City striker Greg Stewart has put pen to paperĀ on a two-year contract with Rangers, according to the Scottish Sun.

The newspaper claims that the 29-year-old, who scored 10 times and bagged 10 assists for Aberdeen during a loan spell this season, has already put the finishing touches to a deal with Steven Gerrard’s side.

His arrival is expected to be announced later this week, with his contract with the Championship team set to expire in the next month or so.

Stewart would become Gers’ third pre-contract signing of the summer, following on from Kilmarnock’s Jordan Jones and Motherwell’s Jake Hastie.

Good move for Rangers?

On paper this would appear to tick a fair few boxes for Rangers. Stewart is a solid frontman, capable of scoring and assisting, with a proven track record in the Scottish Premiership.

He had a decent season with the Dons and, with his Birmingham contract set to expire, he’s a low risk-high reward signing who could go on to play an important part for Gerrard’s team next season. Look, he’s not the type of singing who’s going to blow anyone’s socks off, but he’s a solid performer and you need that in your squad.

Gerrard’s acting quickly to try and close the gap to hated rivals Celtic. Stewart is the latest step in that process, but he’s unlikely to bag 20/25 goals next time out.

Likely to happen?

If you believe the Scottish Sun’s report then this deal is all but done. There’s certainly nothing that looks like it would prevent this signing from happening. Stewart’s agreed terms and Gerrard obviously wants to have him on board, so thee’s surely no stopping this one.

He’ll likely be holding a Rangers shirt in the next day or so.
