Graeme Souness has slammed Allan McGregor following Rangers’ clash with Hibernian on Sunday after the goalkeeper was sent off for kicking out at an opposition player.

The 37-year-old shot-stopper kicked out a Hibernian’s Marc McNulty and his actions led to defender Ross McCrorie having to play between the sticks for the time that remained as Steven Gerrard had used all his substitutes.

Rangers still earned a clean sheet against Hibs as they won 1-0 but Souness was fuming with McGregor’s actions on Sunday.

Whilst speaking to the Mail Online at The Kris Boyd Charity annual golf day for Mental Health at Turnberry, Souness said: “There are sendings-off when the games are a bit meaty and aggressive and you go for challenges and you are maybe a bit late. And there is the stupid one yesterday, for that.

“The manager can talk until he is blue in the face but that has to come from the player, at 37 you would think he would know by now.

“You are deserting the trenches, leaving your pals to it when you are getting sent off for something stupid.”

OPINION

The Rangers goalkeeper has been known throughout his career for having a slight temper, but his actions on Sunday were completely unacceptable, and honestly quite embarrassing for a player of his age. The 37-year old kicked out at the Hibs forward, seemingly without a single thought about the possible repercussions of his actions, and was subsequently shown a straight red card. The veteran keeper will no doubt be hanging his head in shame following the incident, and Souness quite literally said what every Rangers fan will have been thinking after the sending off happened, what a ‘stupid’ thing to do. McGregor will now miss Rangers’ remaining two league fixtures against Celtic and Kilmarnock, which seems like a very underwhelming end to what has been a pretty impressive season for the Scotsman. The former Scotland international will certainly have a job to do in winning back the Rangers faithful ahead of the new campaign, after what can only be described as an act of selfish stupidity.
