John Hartson blasted Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor for kicking out at Hibernian’s Marc McNulty and for feigning injury.

The retired forward shared that it was embarrassing of the Gers shot-stopper to pretend he was injured after getting in a spot of bother and revealed that it left him cringing for the player.

Hartson then added that while he thought McGregor was an excellent goalkeeper, he believes his antics are letting him down.

“What was Allan McGregor doing on Sunday against Hibernian? He must have been taking karate lessons the amount of times he’s kicked out this season now,” wrote Hartson for the Evening Times.

“The ball has gone, and then even worse than the kick out at Marc McNulty, is the fact that he then goes on to feign injury! That was embarrassing.

“He gets sent off in the last minute when his team are 1-0 up, but then to pretend he is injured when he realises he might be in a spot of bother was even more of a red neck than the failed karate kick. I was cringing for him.

“The referee missed him doing something similar against Celtic earlier in the season when he kicked out at Kristoffer Ajer, and while he is an excellent goalkeeper, his antics are increasingly letting him down.”

OPINION

Can anyone argue with Hartson’s opinion here? The former Celtic player is spot on to claim that McGregor lets himself down by doing silly things like kick out at another player. When you consider that the shot-stopper is 37-years-old and has plenty of experience as a result, it’s ridiculous that his disciplinary record is still an issue. McGregor’s sending off against Hibs on Sunday didn’t cost the Gers any points, as they held onto to their 1-0 win, but it still doesn’t excuse his behaviour. The experienced goalkeeper letting his side down in such an embarrassing way yet again surely has Steven Gerrard wondering if he can truly trust the shot-stopper. McGregor may be able to rack up an impressive number of clean sheets, he has got 13 this season, but what use is he if you’re always fearing that he is about to do something unpredictable to put his side’s result in jeopardy.
