Former Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers revealed that he thought people had been getting carried away with the idea of Jose Mourinho becoming the Hoops’ next manager.

The former Manchester United and Real Madrid boss was linked with a move to the Scottish giants earlier this month after Sky Sports Italy claimed the Hoops had put an offer his way.

However, Rodgers believes that the Portuguese coach would prove to be too expensive for Celtic, should they be truly considering bringing him to Celtic Park.

“I think again it’s where things get carried away a wee bit,” said Rodgers to Premier Sports (13:15, Saturday 25th May).

“With all due respect to Jose, I don’t think with the money he would demand as one of the leading managers in world football, he is going to get that at Celtic.

“Of course he is a world class manager, but whoever Celtic get in will be a very good manager.”

OPINION

Although a lot of people would have never in a million years imagined that Mourinho would be one of the names Celtic would be pursuing to be their next manager, it seems fans got a little carried away when he was reportedly linked to the role earlier in May. However, Rodgers’ point still stands, and is pretty accurate, in that the Scottish giants would not have enough money to shell out to pay the wage demands that the Portuguese coach would be looking for. Arguably, a move to Scotland would be whole new challenge for Mourinho, and he could make a real impact to the nature of Scottish football with his arrival, however the question still stands as to whether he would ever take such a significant pay-cut to manage Celtic, which does seem highly unlikely. It seems that the fans of the club were ecstatic when the reports surfaced, as you would be, but in reality, the probability of the move ever happening seemed very short-lived.
