Newcastle journalist Lee Ryder has said that sources at the club have denied that manager Rafa Benitez has been offered a one-year deal.

He added that talks would be held after the final game of the season, against Fulham later on today.

The Sun had earlier reported that Newcastle had offered Benitez a massive £15million 12-month deal, with the manager keen on a short-term deal.

However Ryder, writing on his personal Twitter page, denied this.

OPINION

Uncertainty at Newcastle? Surely not. Newcastle fans won’t be surprised about this and Lee Ryder, chief Newcastle writer at the Chronicle, will have good sources at the club. However, Alan Nixon is a reliable reporter and his sources are normally immaculate too. It could well be the case that this is what’s going to be offered, but that it won’t be formally done until after the Fulham game. That makes a lot of sense. The one-year deal makes a lot of sense too, with Benitez likely to be reticent about committing himself long-term to the club with Mike Ashley in charge. If there is truth in the deal, with Benitez getting a basic of £240k-a-week, then it would be just reward for Benitez and you wouldn’t find any Newcastle fan begrudging him the money. However, there might well be surprise that Ashley is willing to splash out that much money. It shows how valuable Benitez is to the club and its continued survival in the Premier League.
