Roma could be forced to offload Tottenham target Nicolo Zaniolo in the summer if they fail to qualify for the Champions League, according to Calcio Mercato.

The Italian news outlet claims that there is a “concrete” possibility that Spurs will table a bid to sign the 19-year-old attacker in the upcoming transfer window after they sent scouts to watch him play against Juventus on Sunday.

Zaniolo completed 90 minutes in a 2-0 win for Roma but Claudio Ranieri’s side is currently sixth in Serie A with two matches to play and three points shy of the top-four with a far inferior goal difference.

Good move for Tottenham?

Zaniolo is a very good young player and Spurs fans should definitely be thrilled if Mauricio Pochettino is able to lure the attacking midfield to North London in the summer transfer window.

He has made 35 appearances in all competitions this term, scoring six goals and supplying two assists in the process.

The Italy international scored twice against Porto in the Champions League knock-out rounds and has also found the net against Torino and AC Milan in the league this season.

Zaniolo has bags of potential and would be a great addition to the Tottenham squad with the view to him becoming a key player in a few years’ time.

Likely to happen?

Roma have a lot to do if they want to qualify for next season’s Champions League, and Zaniolo’s future in the Italian capital seems to hinge on that.

Ranieri’s side are sixth at the moment but have two winnable games against Sassuolo and Parma to play in their last two matches.

They are battling Inter Milan, Atalanta and AC Milan for either third or spot in Serie A while seventh-placed Torino also have an outside chance of qualifying for the Champions League.

It’s going to be a big ask but it’s doable, and that is why it’s so hard to tell whether Zaniolo will leave or not in the summer.
