Rod Stewart has said that he thinks Rangers should give Celtic a guard of honour at the Old Firm clash on Sunday.

Rangers have taken the decision not to honour the champions after they won the title by beating Aberdeen 3-0 last weekend.

Talking on the Jim White Show (talkSPORT, Friday, 11am) Stewart claimed it was an opportunity missed when he was asked how he felt.

“If the shoe was on the other foot I’d love Celtic to give a guard of honour to Rangers. I find it so childish and it’s not a good example for the kids,” Stewart said.

“Celtic, I would be so proud if Celtic give Rangers a guard of honour if they win the title next year. I didn’t like the ticket allocation either and I was disappointed with Celtic. It’s like Michelle Obama says, they go low, we go high.”

Asked for his prediction on the Old Firm clash, Stewart bet Jim White £10 that Celtic would win the game and was so confident he gave the talkSPORT host the draw.

OPINION

It’s the story that won’t go away. Every single pundit and talking head has had their say on whether Ranger should give Celtic a guard of honour on Sunday. On the face of it it seems like a no-brainer. It’s football, it’s just a game, Celtic have won the title and Rangers should acknowledge that. But that’s only half the story. The other half is the bitter rivalry between Celtic and Rangers and the decades of history behind the two teams. Rangers don’t have to like Celtic winning the title. In fact, they should hate it. And they don’t have to show them respect just because some people think they should. However, on the flip side, how do you break the cycle? Scottish football would be better if the Celtic and Rangers rivalry was dialled back a few notches and it’s going to take one of the clubs to make a move to try to make that better. It’s not going to be Rangers this year and it will be fascinating to see if Celtic do if Rangers win the title next season.
