Newcastle United midfielder Matt Ritchie has confirmed that he “will do everything” for the club opening discussions over a new contract.

The Englishman – who appeared in 36 of 38 Premier League games last season – is currently contracted at St. James’ Park until the summer of 2021.

Speaking to the Newcastle Chronicle, however, Ritchie insisted that he would like talks over an extension resolved sooner rather than later.

“There are discussions at the moment, hopefully we can get them resolved,” the 29-year-old said.

“This is a massive football club, I’m really enjoying playing for so until I’m told my services are no longer required, I’m fighting for my life as I do every week to perform. Who knows what the future holds but until I’m told my services are no longer required, I’ll do everything for the football club.”

OPINION

With just over two seasons left on his current deal, there is no rush for Ritchie to go ahead and sign the extension, but it is clear from his quotes that he is desperate to. He loves Newcastle, and Newcastle fans love him. Since he arrived from Bournemouth in the summer of 2016, Ritchie has been one of the Magpies’ key men, helping guide them to promotion as Championship champions in his first season. Since then, the Englishman’s attitude has not changed one bit. He has helped Newcastle achieve 10th-placed and 13th-placed finishes in their last two seasons back in the Premier League, and has scored vital goals, such as the one against Manchester United at the back end of the 2017/18 season. Overall, Ritchie has continued to fight for the shirt and thoroughly deserves a new contract, so signing it is at the top of his priorities – and should be near the top of the club’s list.
