Rangers will announce the capture of Birmingham City midfielder Greg Stewart following Aberdeen’s final game of the season on Sunday, according to the Daily Record.

After Football Insider reported that the 29-year-old – who is on loan at the Gers’ Premiership rivals – had accepted a three-year contract with the club, the newspaper now says that the signing will be confirmed at the end of the week.

Stewart – who has also spent time in Scotland with Dundee and Kilmarnock, has made 36 appearances for Aberdeen, scoring 10 goals and assisting as many others.

If these reports are true, this is a shrewd signing by Rangers. Stewart – whose previous spells at Aberdeen and Kilmarnock have not pulled up trees – has gone on loan again this season and this time, he has done brilliantly. The 29-year-old has proven that he can be a goal-scoring midfielder – shown by the 10 he has scored this term – while his 10 assists for the campaign showcase his abilities as a playmaker. To make this signing even better, if there’s one thing Rangers need this summer – and one type of player they need in particular – it’s a dynamic, creative midfielder who can help out in the middle of the park but also go forward and provide a consistent goal threat. While Stewart may not have shown those qualities in his previous loan spells, he has certainly shown them this season and it is a very good time for Rangers to be acquiring his services.
