Rangers want to sign Oldham defender George Edmundson in the summer transfer window, according to the Daily Record.

The newspaper claims that Edmundson, 21, was given a tour of the Gers’ training ground at Auchenhowie last week and after missing out on a deal to sign Mexer from Rennes, the Glasgow giants have eyed up a potential move for the 6ft 3 (transfermarkt) centre-back.

It is understood that Stoke, Hull, Sunderland and Fleetwood are also interested in signing Edmundson, who made 54 appearances in all competitions for League Two side Oldham this season.

Good move for Rangers?

Edmundson has had a solid season at Boundary Park but there have to be serious doubts about whether moving from the fourth-tier of English football to the top-flight in Scotland is something that the centre-back can cope with.

The Daily Record reports that the former Fylde loanee is valued at £450,000, which is a lot of money for someone who has only played in the lower reaches of the English Football League and the non-league.

It was unfortunate that Rangers missed out on Mexer because he was a full international, a cup winner, had bags of experience and was available for free.

Edmundson is a massive downgrade from the Mozambique international and Mark Allen has to be eyeing up better targets.

Likely to happen?

As Edmundson was reportedly invited to Auchenhowie last week, it does seem as though Rangers are serious about signing the English defender.

However Steven Gerrard and director of football Allen are bound to have a number of defensive targets on their mind going into the summer transfer window.

Joe Worrall will head back to Nottingham Forest once his loan is over and it is understood that Gareth McAuley is also leaving once his contract expires.

Rangers will surely sign one or two new centre-backs in the summer, but it remains to be seen if Edmundson will be one of them.
