Rangers are on the brink of agreeing to sign Steven Davis on a permanent deal in the summer, according to the Scottish Sun

Davis has been on loan from Southampton since January and his contract there runs out in the summer.

The report claims that talks have already taken place and Rangers are “on the verge” of agreement with the 34-year-old Northern Ireland international, who has scored 11 goals for his country.

OPINION

This would be a significant deal for Rangers. Davis took a while to settle in at Ibrox but has become a mainstay in the side now and there’s a feeling that Gerrard can build his side around Davis and Defoe next season. Davis is 34 but still has years left in the Premiership. Gerrard is also adding youth around the more experienced players, with 20-year-old Jake Hastie being announced on a four-year- deal just after being shortlisted for Scotland’s Young Player of the Year. Davis must have taken a big pay cut from his Southampton deal, where he’s reported to be on £60k-a-year. That shows the lure of life at Ibrox under Gerrard and it could mean that some of the more outlandish names that have been mentioned with a move to Ibrox could actually come off. No one thought Defoe would join and he’s now with Rangers for another season. This season might not have gone exactly to plan for Gerrard, but next season is already looking bright. And, really, no one expected Gerrard to win the league in his first season except the most optimistic of fans.
