Rangers have offered 6ft 2in Rennes defender, Edson Mexer, a long-term deal with the club, according to Football Insider.

The 30-year-old 44-times capped Mozambique international is the latest player who Steven Gerrard is wanting to bring to Ibrox. Gerrard was pictured in France last week and it is now understood that the Gers boss was there to hold talks with Mexer.

The defender’s deal with the French outfit is due to expire in the summer, leaving him available to depart on a free transfer. Mexer made 41 appearances for Rennes last term, including playing seven times in the Europa League. Clubs are free to negotiate deals with Mexer, and it is Rangers who have made the first significant contract move.

Defender Joe Worrall’s loan deal is coming to an end in addition to Gareth McAuley being out of contract this summer. Gerrard will be eager to fill any defensive gaps.

Good move for Rangers?

A player of this quality would be a strong addition for any of the bigger sides in Scotland, the fact Mexer has been an ever-present figure for a side like Rennes speaks volume. Connor Goldson enjoyed an impressive first season with the Gers and if Gerrard is able to bring in another quality centre back, Rangers’ defensive structure would arguably be the strongest in the division. With Mexer being out of contract, it would be a smart move from Rangers which would allow funds to be spent on other players.

Is it likely?

Given that Steven Gerrard has already travelled over to France to offer Mexer a deal, Rangers are clearly determined to get a deal over the line. The fact that the defender is out of contract is a big bonus for Rangers, it makes the deal much more realistic and really does seem as if the club are making serious advancements with this one.
