Rangers are getting there.

It’s been a slog, and they’ve had to endure watching their bitterest rivals enjoy one of the most successful spells in the history of the Scottish game, but you get the impression that things are finally beginning to look up at Ibrox.

A promising league campaign petered out somewhat after the winter break, and the Gers will surely have been hoping for more from their cup run, but all the signs are that this is a team making steady progress under Steven Gerrard.

That may well stretch into European competition as well after the latest report on where the Gers will be seeded for next season.

According to the Daily Record, Rangers and Aberdeen will both benefit from results elsewhere in Europe that mean they will be given a more favourable seeding going into next season’s Europa League.

That means that the Gers will now avoid top sides like Wolves, Israeli club Hapeol Beer-Sheva and Dutch outfit AZ Alkmaar in the early qualifying rounds.

And Gerrard’s men must pounce on this opportunity.

In the grand scheme of things, domestic success is far more important than European progression, of course, but Rangers could really make use of a good run on the continent.

Aside from the prize money, it would send a clear message to any potential signings in the future: the Gers are back, and Ibrox is the place to be.

Football isn’t just about results, it’s about the illusion of power, and if Rangers can start to flex their might on the continental stage once more, and fair few ears will prick up around the professional game.
