Rangers are in the hunt to re-sign midfielder Dylan McGeouch from Sunderland this summer, according to the Northern Echo.

The newspaper claims that McGeouch, 26, is considering whether to quit the Stadium of Light with his contract expiring on June 30, and a return north of the border could be on the cards for the former Rangers and Celtic youngster.

McGeouch joined Sunderland from Hibernian last summer but has had a disappointing, injury-hit campaign in England’s League One.

The Echo claims that Rangers are not the only club interested in the central midfielder with Blackburn, QPR, Brentford and Aberdeen also eyeing him up amid uncertainty surrounding his future at Sunderland.

Good move for Rangers?

McGeouch has been around the block a bit in Glasgow having had two spells at Celtic on either side of a stint at Rangers as a youngster.

After making the grade at Celtic Park, he eventually joined Hibernian, where he made 121 appearances in all competitions over four years and really got the grips with playing in the Scottish Premiership.

The two-times Scotland international played well for Hibs last term under Neil Lennon’s charge, but has not really replicated that form on Wearside with Sunderland.

As McGeouch could be available for free then he might be a good player to add some strength in depth to Steven Gerrard’s midfield options.

However that is not what the Gers need this summer, they need players who can walk straight into that first team squad.

Likely to happen?

Rangers have already agreed to sign Steven Davis on a permanent deal and they also have plenty of other players who can do a job in McGeouch’s position.

Signing the Scottish midfielder would be a bit of a waste of Gerrard’s wage budget and with other clubs interested in him, it’s more likely that he will join one of them.
