Rangers are in hot pursuit of Fenerbahce defender Martin Skrtel, according to Milliyet.

The Turkish news outlet claims that the 34-year-old will be available for free in the summer transfer window with his contract Fenerbahce due to expire at the end of June.

It is understood that Rangers are “closely watching” Steven Gerrard’s former Liverpool team-mate while Parma and Olympiakos are also interested in signing the Slovakian centre-back.

Good move for Rangers?

It would be a good move for Rangers if Skrtel’s wage demands weren’t too high.

The 103-times Slovakia international has been ever-present for Fenerbahce this season by appearing 39 times across all competitions.

However the Istanbul giants have endured a terrible season and Skrtel has been in the defence in some really poor matches for his side.

Skrtel is someone with a lot of experience though and he could be a good back-up option at Ibrox with Gareth McAuley and Joe Worrall due to leave Ibrox in the coming weeks.

Likely to happen?

Gerrard should be able to lure Skrtel to Ibrox if he really wants to sign the ex-Liverpool defender but he was linked with Rangers so much last summer that it just seems as though a deal will never really happen.

Skrtel is likely to leave Fenerbahce but Parma are reportedly leading the race for his signature at the moment, and that means Rangers are unlikely to snap up the defender.
