Wolves have joined Newcastle in the race to land West Brom and Venezuela striker Solomon Rondon, according to The Daily Mail.

The Venezuela international enjoyed a successful spell in the North East last term, scoring 11 times for Newcastle in the Premier League.

West Brom will trigger a deal to extend the 29-year-old’s deal which will allow the striker to leave for £16.5 million.

The release clause will be introduced due to West Brom failing to win promotion to the Premier League.

Wolves recently smashed their transfer record by signing striker Raul Jimenez on a permanent basis for £34 million.

Jimenez is the club’s only striker and Rondon could be brought in to add competition and provide much-needed squad depth.

Good move for Wolves?

Rondon would be a sensational addition and gives Wolves a different option going forward. If Manchester City defeat Watford in the Fa Cup final, Wolves will be in the Europa League next season. The squad will need new recruits to be a competitive force in the competition and Rondon would certainly bolster their options.  £16.5 million is a terrific deal for a player who scored 12 goals in all competitions for an inconsistent Newcastle side – Wolves should take advantage of what could be an absolute steal.  Rondon’s seven assists last season speak volume about the role that he is able to play and midfield players can really feed off him.

Likely to happen?

Rondon is said to be keen on a permanent move to Newcastle. However, Mike Ashley has reservations about spending that much money on a 29-year-old and he doesn’t like spending money at the best of times. The attraction of potential European football with Wolves could sway his thinking and play a big factor in his decision, and Wolves would seem like a more attractive option at the moment. Jimenez and Rondon together as a front two would cause any side in the league problems – the duo scored 24 goals in the Premier League between them last term. The asking price is almost too good to be true for a player of this calibre and Wolves signing the Venezuelan would be a smart of business.
