West Ham are interested in signing Chelsea goalkeeper Willy Caballero, according to the Evening Standard.

They’re looking for an experienced back-up for Lukasz Fabianski, with Adrian set to leave in the summer, and manager Manuel Pellegrini has worked with Caballero before at Man City.

Chelsea signed the 37-year-old on a free transfer from City in the summer of 2017 and he’s made 22 appearances since then.

This season he’s made nine appearances and kept five clean sheets, with two games in the Premier League.

His contract with Chelsea runs out this summer and he would be available on a free transfer again.

Good move for West Ham?

Caballero has proved himself as an able stand-in at Chelsea and although he’s 37 we still think he could do a job at West Ham for a season or two. And, on a reported £40k-a-week at Chelsea, his wages wouldn’t be a problem, especially as they could probably get him for less than that. West Ham have a really talented youngster ready to take the gloves in the future in Nathan Trott, but he’s likely to head out on loan in the summer and West Ham will need to get someone in with Adrian leaving. We think Caballero would be a decent signing.

Likely to happen?

Two factors make it likely to happen in our minds. Firstly, he’s out of contract in the summer and will be keen to get another deal in the Premier League for what could be his last big-money contract. Secondly, Pellegrini knows him well from his days at Man City and that could swing him towards West Ham.
