Tottenham defender Kieran Trippier has revealed his frustration after a disappointing campaign which has put his future at the club under threat.

The England international has been left out of Gareth Southgate’s squad for the upcoming UEFA Nation’s League finals in June and has put his poor season down to his lack of fitness through injuries.

Speaking to Football London, Trippier admitted: “I have had a lot of groin injuries, I have been struggling with my groins from a number of months now, it has been affecting me, annoying me, but there has been so many games”.

“It has not helped [my form], obviously with the World Cup in the summer and coming back and playing straight away….the season has gone now, I have to accept the way I have played this season, I know I can play so much better.”

After scoring in the World Cup semi-final defeat to Croatia last summer, Trippier has failed to make an impact under Mauricio Pochettino this season and has reportedly attracted interest from both Atletico Madrid and Napoli.

He made 27 appearances in the Premier League this season without leaving a big impact on the games he has featured in so far.

OPINION

There is no doubt that Kieran Trippier can show he is much better than what he has been this season at Tottenham. The full-back proved his worth when playing for England in the World Cup but has not lived up to the same hype in the Premier League this season. The rumours surrounding his future are not positive reading for the 28-year-old, with his club seeming willing to let him go. Injuries or not, the England international has had plenty of time to stamp his authority on his position within the squad and has consistently failed to do so. With Atletico Madrid rumoured to be preparing a £30million offer for Trippier, it would be a no-brainer to sell the ageing defender with the view to replace him or give Serge Aurier full control over the same role. Aurier is a much more powerful and dynamic option than Trippier and the Ivorian could be a better option moving forward.
