Spurs must aim higher than Camarasa

Tottenham are clearly in the market for a midfielder in the summer and the latest link to be reported is Spurs’ reported interest in Cardiff loanee Victor Camarasa.

Mauricio Pochettino is reported to have a strong interest in the Spanish midfielder currently on loan from Real Betis as revealed by Eldesmarque.

The Spanish publication reported that Tottenham will be rivalled by West Ham for the signature of Camarasa and any side will have to pay a release clause of £21million.

This will be disappointing news for Spurs fans and they will be expecting much more from the summer window after a year and a half without a single new arrival in north London.

Camarasa has been a standout performer in a poor Cardiff side, whose relegation was confirmed on Saturday. Having said this, it does not warrant the apparent interest from a side who are battling to consistently finish in the top three in the Premier League.

If Camarasa was rated as highly as this, his parent club Real Betis would not have allowed him to leave in the summer of 2018 and better clubs than Cardiff would have been interested.

Pochettino’s side do not need a playmaker who will score goals, their problem is finding a midfielder who can sit in front of the defence and give freedom to his attacking teammates and control any game they are in.

At 24-years-old, Camarasa is not this player, having only registered four assists and five goals in a losing effort which eventually saw his side relegated.

This would be the opposite of a so-called statement of intent from Spurs, who need to aim much higher if they are to consistently secure Champions League football in the years to come.
