Tottenham hero Graham Roberts has claimed that Harry Kane has to play in the Champions League final against Liverpool on Saturday.

The striker has been out of action since the quarter final first leg against Manchester City with an ankle problem, but Roberts insists that he must be given a starting berth against the Reds in Madrid.

Writing on Twitter, he said: “Harry Kane has to play, he frightens the life out of the centre halves and we need him as one of best strikers in world.”

OPINION

You can understand Roberts’ logic on this one, but honestly, he might be a little way wide of the mark. Kane is irresistible on his day, nobody is disputing that, but he has been out for a long time, and Spurs are doing pretty okay without him. They saw of Manchester City, they engineered one of the greatest comebacks in European history in Amsterdam, and they managed to secure a top four finish to boot. Last time Kane was out, the club went winless in five league matches after his return, and they cannot afford a similar kind of malaise on Saturday. It would make far more sense to stick with a winning formula, to put faith in Lucas Moura and Son Heung-min, and to have Kane on the bench ready to make an impact in the last half an hour of the game or extra time, if it gets that far. Staring him seems like the right thing to do, but honestly, it could prove to be a rash piece of misjudgement.
