Gus Poyet warned Tottenham midfielder Dele Alli about getting distracted by his social life and urged him to keep doing what he has been doing.

The former Spurs player shared that Alli is capable of being a very impressive player on his day, like in the Champions League semi-final against Ajax, but shared he wished him not to go down the wrong path socially.

Poyet shared that he thought Alli had the ability to influence games if he didn’t let his mind wander about non-footballing issues.

“He just needs to keep doing what he has been doing,” wrote Poyet in his column for the People’s print edition (Sunday May 26th, page 3 of Champions League preview pullout).

“With the quality he has and his influence on the game, I’d like him not to take road of too much social life and be the very impressive player he was in the semi-final.”

OPINION

Alli is not one to frequent social media often, so it’s unclear why Poyet has warned the midfielder about his social life. Perhaps the former Spurs player has an issue with Alli spending his free time playing video games live on Twitch, but that would be odd. The 23-year-old’s form in his 2018/19 campaign has been a bit hit and miss across his 37 outings this season, but it’s surely not because of his social life. In anything at times you feel Alli could have done with a break from the first-team and perhaps returned from injury too quickly, and that this caused his form to be inconsistent. However the midfielder can have no excuses when it comes to delivering the goods against Liverpool in the Champions League final, as by the time the game comes around, Alli will be well rested. The midfielder is capable of wowing on one of the grandest stages of them all and for Spurs’ sake, they’ll hope he puts his best foot forward.
