Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino is “poised” to start midfielder Harry Winks in the Champions League final, according to the Daily Mail.

The 23-year-old – who has made 40 appearances for Pochettino’s side this season – has not featured since the quarter-final first leg against Manchester City on April 9 after undergoing groin surgery.

The newspaper says, however, that Winks has recovered in time and that the Argentine boss is considering throwing him into the team to face Liverpool on Saturday.

Spurs are contesting their first-ever Champions League final this weekend against a Reds side keen to avenge last season’s 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid.

OPINION

Harry Winks has been an important player for Tottenham this season and his return could be key. That’s reflected in the fact that Pochettino is considering throwing him straight into the starting line-up. The midfield battle could be key on Saturday night and Winks offers something that Poch doesn’t get from any of his other defensive midfielders – a willingness to always look and move forward. Pochettino has a couple of absolutely key decisions to make on Saturday and they both involve Harrys. In addition to Winks, Pochettino has to decide whether to start Kane on the pitch or on the bench. He’s aware that’s a decision that could make or break the Champions League and unless Tottenham win it’s a decision that he knows will come back and haunt him. It’s a classic damned if he does damned if he doesn’t – the only way round that is if Tottenham are lifting the trophy on Saturday night.
