Having Harry Kane back on the bench for the second leg of Tottenham’s Champions League semi-final against Ajax would be a “massive boost”, according to Ray Parlour.

After aggravating an ankle ligament injury in the quarter final first leg against Manchester City, the England captain was forced to sit out Tuesday night’s 1-0 defeat to the Dutch side, but there is increasing hope that he could feature in the return fixture in Amsterdam next week.

Following a lacklustre display in London, Parlour believes that could be vital for Spurs.

Speaking on The Debate, he said: “Dele and Moura, they were a little bit out of sorts for them.

“Son is such a big player for them.

“We know about Harry Kane, there’s a possibility he could be back.

“That would be a massive boost, absolutely massive, it really is. If you need a goal 10 or 15 minutes before the end, he can always nick you a goal. That’s how good he is.”

OPINION

Parlour won’t get any prizes for innovation with his comments, but you can’t deny that he is on the money. Tottenham looked toothless and bereft of creativity on Tuesday night, and having Kane back as an option would go a long way towards solving that issue. People talk about his goals, and for obvious reasons, but there should also be a focus on the build up play that he helps contribute to. Kane so often drops deep to collect the ball, sucking defenders out of position and creating space in behind for his teammates to occupy. Add to that a sublime range of passing, and increasingly Kane plays as both a number 9 and a number 10. Losing a player of his powers is always going to be a blow, and the hope will be, despite logic dictating a much longer recovery period, that he can come back and make a difference in Amsterdam next week.
