Jose Mourinho has suggested that Tottenham winning the Champions League would be “fantastic” and that it would make claiming future titles easier.

Spurs will face Liverpool in final in Madrid on June 1st, and both Mauricio Pochettino and his opposite number Jurgen Klopp will be bidding to pick up a first trophy at their respective clubs.

And Mourinho believes that the first piece of silverware is the hardest.

Speaking to Sky Sports, as quoted by the Express, he said: “Of course, Spurs is not winning titles and to win the first one, the biggest one of all, would be, of course, fantastic.

“It would mean to win other domestic trophies [is easier] because the Champions League is the biggest one of all.

“I think, big match, of course, with huge levels of pressure.

“We used to say finals are not to play, finals are to win.”

OPINION

Mourinho might not be right here. You would suggest that breaking the drought in north London could well help to open the floodgates with regards to picking up trophies, but realistically, is that actually the case? For one thing, this Tottenham side are facing an unprecedented amount of pressure on a domestic level. Manchester City and Liverpool are arguably two of the most formidable sides we have ever seen in the English game, and you would fancy that they will both get stronger over the next few years too. Having a Champions League to their name won’t make it any easier for Spurs to keep pace with those two in the league. An FA Cup could be doable, but has it not been just as attainable over the past few years? As for future European glory, you feel as if this could be Spurs’ one chance to properly kick on and win the big prize. Their very being in the final is arguably something of a fluke, and the chances of it happening again any time soon feel slim.
