Denmark national team manager Age Hareide has suggested that Tottenham midfielder Christian Eriksen could be staying with the club this summer.

Eriksen’s current £75,000-a-week contract at Tottenham runs out at the end of next season [Spotrac.com], meaning the midfielder could potentially be sold this summer so Spurs can receive a fee for the talented player.

The Denmark international, who scored eight goals and registered 12 assists for Mauricio Pochettino’s side in the Premier League this season, is thought to be a potential target for Real Madrid this summer, according to BBC Sport.

However, Eriksen’s international manager Hareide has now suggested that the midfielder could stay at Tottenham next season after Pochettino’s side reached the Champions League final this term.

“Michael Laudrup became an icon after playing in both  clubs in Spain (Barcelona and Real Madrid), but Christian perhaps is an icon already. Tottenham is in the Champions League final and not Real Madrid,” Hareide said as quoted by The Mirror.

OPINION

Hareide’s comments could be a boost to Tottenham’s hopes of keeping Eriksen at the club this summer, with the midfielder an integral part of Pochettino’s side who have reached the Champions League final this season. Tottenham will be doing all they can to ensure the Denmark international does not leave the club, but Daniel Levy will also not be wanting to let a player of Eriksen’s quality leave for nothing at the end of his current deal. Therefore it will be interesting to see whether Eriksen remains at the club at the start of next season, with Real Madrid thought to be interested in securing his signature. As Eriksen’s national team manager suggests the Dane could well be better off staying with Spurs, as it is them who are on the up after another impressive season and Real Madrid who are on the decline after a poor campaign for the Spanish side. Therefore Tottenham might be able to convince Eriksen to commit his future to the club, which would be a real boost heading into next season. For now both Tottenham and Eriksen will be concentrating on winning the Champions League final against Liverpool in Madrid.
