Tottenham are being linked with every man and his dog this summer, with Daniel Levy expected to loosen his iron grip on the Spurs wallet this summer.

However, there are sources and then there are sources. Tottenham fans might not know about Phil Hay, a senior reporter from the Yorkshire Evening Post, but Leeds fans hang off every word he says.

He doesn’t peddle in rumours and waits until he knows something before running with a story or tweeting.

He’s now broken cover over Jack Clarke, the thrilling attacker who broke into the Leeds team this season, and he’s said that while there’s been “No formal offer yet… all the signs suggest that one is coming from Tottenham.”

A previous report from Football Insider claimed that Spurs were ready to try again with a new move for Clarke after Leeds failed to win promotion.

That’s been picked up and recycled by a lot of outlets but this is the first talk from Phil Hay.

And it should get Tottenham fans very excited. We’ve watched Clarke a lot this season and he wowed us when he was first introduced to first-team action.

He set up the winner in the first meeting between Leeds and Sheffield United and scored a brilliant goal, his first for the club, against Aston Villa.

He dropped out of the team after suffering from a virus and never managed to scale the heights again towards the end of the season but we’ve got no doubt about his potential as a direct-running, creative, attacking star.

Football Insider mentioned the fee as being £10million and that could be a real bargain for Levy, for a player who Gary Lineker has earmarked as a player for England’s future.

Leeds need the money to rebuild their squad and the £10million could come in very handy for them.
