Newcastle went in to Saturday’s game with Liverpool on the back of a great run which saw them secure Premier League survival. Rafael Benitez had injuries to contend with in the build up to the game with his former side and the Spaniard decided to keep faith in Christian Atsu after Miguel Almiron’s season ending injury. The game ended in a 3-2 defeat against the title challenging Liverpool thanks to a late goal from Divock Origi. Klopp praised Newcastle’s style of play saying his side had to concentrate 100% of the time when going forward and defending against the threat of the long ball to Salomon Rondon. The inclusion of Atsu worked to great effect as his pace and direct running on the ball caused Liverpool’s defence great problems. The Ghanaian was rewarded for his start to the game with the first equalising goal as he fired home a rebound from a Rondon shot, proving that if you find yourself in the right place at the right time you can hurt anyone. Newcastle fans reacted to Atsu’s performance with great joy on Twitter with one saying: “you were superb tonight! Was so happy when you scored!”. He was an unlikely goal scorer but the Toon Army did not mind one bit.
