Rafa Benitez’ Newcastle contract is set to expire in less than seven weeks and a new deal is yet to be agreed.

However, Scotland international Matt Ritchie remains optimistic about the Spaniard staying with the club.

The Magpies finished 13th in the Premier League following an emphatic 4-0 win at Fulham on the final day last Sunday.

Ritchie enjoyed a fine season under Benitez and the 29-year-old is hopeful a deal can be agreed to extend Benitez’ stay.

“I don’t really want to talk about that because I don’t think we’re going to (lose him),” As quoted in Chronicle Live.

“I’m optimistic that he will stay; I hope he stays, everyone hopes he stays. There is no point talking about ifs and buts, as we don’t know yet, let’s just wait and see.”

OPINION

There has been so much talk about Benitez and his future. Newcastle owner Mike Ashley must do all in his power in order to agree a deal to prolong Benitez’ stay at St. James’ Park. This has to be the club’s main priority and with such a small budget, the club will not find a manager able to do a better job. If Benitez departs, Newcastle will be in deep trouble next season. Their squad overachieved last term and 59-year-old’s tutelage is a big reason why the Magpies were able to finish as high as they did. Ritchie’s comments are both hopeful and modest – a player simply wouldn’t come out and question the manager’s future. If Mike Ashley can guarantee Benitez money to spend in the summer and show signs of genuine ambition, Benitez may decide to stay with the club. Without these guarantees, however, it’s very difficult to see Benitez extending his deal. It’s worrying that he is yet to sign a new contract and the clock is now ticking.
