John Motson believes Wolves have to ensure they have enough squad depth to cope with the difficulty of playing in Europe next season.

The legendary commentator congratulated Wolves on qualifying for the Europa League but claimed it wouldn’t be easy for them to succeed.

Motson added that Wolves have probably learnt lessons from how Burnley were effected by the Europa League and pointed out the club need to make sure their able to rotate their squad to deal with the competition’s early fixtures.

“It won’t, forty years it’s been since Wolves played in Europe so congratulations to them, finishing seventh of course and had the cup final gone the other way they wouldn’t have got into Europe but that’s how it has worked out,” said Motson on talkSPORT (14:47, Monday May 20th).

“And they’ll be in the Europa League and guess there will be lessons to be learnt from Burnley cause y’know Wolves’ coaching staff know you play six games before you even start thinking about the Premier League.

“So it is going to be difficult for them and I think all the Premiership clubs bar the fact one, and I don’t know who that is, will all invest this summer, I think there will be a changing of the guard at a lot of teams, even those in midtable and further down.

“If Zaha goes, Crystal Palace will reinvest so it will happen everywhere.

“So what Wolves will have to do is make sure they have enough in hand on the bench to rotate and cope with those early fixtures.”

OPINION

Many Wolves fans are surely equally as excited as they are worried about their club playing in Europe next season. Wolves featuring in the Europa League shows the huge strides the club have made, but when you look at how Burnley fell apart in their latest season, it’s hard not to worry. The Clarets couldn’t cope with playing so many games ahead of the Premier League season starting that not only did they go straight out of the tournament, it caused them to struggle in the league for many weeks. However Wolves have the funds to avoid making the same mistakes as their Premier League rivals. Wolves need to add at least a couple of players to their squad to cope with the Europa League, but they also need to ensure they only make quality signings. It’s no good signing players for the sake of having someone to call upon, however Wolves’ recent transfer business has been nothing short of amazing.
