Atletico Madrid have bid £17.3million for Manchester City defender Nicolas Otamendi, according to Gazzetta dello Sport journalist Nicolo Schira.

The reliable reporter claims, via their personal Twitter account, that talks are ongoing between the Spanish club and Man City following the offer being made for the 31-year-old centre-back.

Schira stated that Atletico Madrid wanted to close a deal for Otamendi.

“#AtleticoMadrid want to close Nicolas #Otamendi. Colchoneros have offered €20M to #ManchesterCity. Contacts ongoing,” wrote Schira.

Good Move for Man City?

Yes.

Man City should be snapping Atletico Madrid’s arm off if they have truly bid £17.3million as that is a significant offer for someone the wrong side of 30.

This is especially the case when you consider that Otamendi is on mega money at Man City as he earns £120,000-a-week (Source: Spotrac), as Atletico Madrid will more than likely have to offer him a huge contract to tempt him to join.

Given that Man City are still talking with the Euro club about the defender, then perhaps they will soon accept it or push their luck even further by squeezing just a little bit more out of Atletico Madrid.

If they manage to do that, then it will be a very good deal indeed.

Likely to happen?

There should be a chance if Schira’s information is correct.

Otamendi featured 33 times across all competitions for Pep Guardiola’s side and played his part in another successful season for the club. However given his age and the fact he isn’t a guaranteed starter, it just makes sense to sell him in the upcoming window.

The only thing that may stand in the way of the defender exiting is the fact teammate Vincent Kompany is set to depart, so maybe Guardiola won’t want too much change.
