Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has admitted that his side need a “miracle” if they are to snatch the Premier League title away from Manchester City.

The Anfield giants currently sit top of the table on 94 points having played a game more than City, who host Leicester City at the Etihad on Monday evening.

Should City overcome Leicester, they travel to Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday while Liverpool host Wolves, and a win for both sides will mean City will retain the title with 98 points, two less than their record-breaking total last season.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror, Reds midfielder Henderson admitted that the title is out of his side’s hands and that Jurgen Klopp’s team are relying on a slip up from their title rivals.

“To be fair to us, we’re putting up a great challenge,” the England international said. “City are a great team, but so are we. We’ve competed right to the very end.

“Whoever gets it will deserve it. From our point of view, we couldn’t have done any more. It’s going to the last game and we need to finish on a high at Anfield and then pray that something, a miracle, can happen.

“We’ve got a game on Tuesday. Barcelona, a big game and we’ll have to focus on that, but I’m sure the lads will watch the game. Yeah, like I say, pray for a miracle.

“Leicester, who are a great team, will go and give everything — like you saw [on Saturday] from Newcastle. I’m sure Brighton will. I’m sure Wolves will. Everyone wants to cause an upset, so hopefully there are another couple of twists and turns to come.”

OPINION

Liverpool are indeed praying on a miracle if they are to end their 29-year wait for a league title. They have performed so well this season, losing only once in 37 games so far – and that was to City themselves. But that will count for nothing if they fall short, and it is likely that City will have one hand on the title by the end of Monday evening. While City’s last Premier League loss at the Etihad came against Crystal Palace in December, their last defeat at home before then was against Chelsea in December 2016. It would be a monumental result if Leicester City were to win – or even nick a point – and the Foxes need to get the first goal or that will be that. Brighton won’t cause City problems on the final day; they are just happy to have survived. All Liverpool can do now is hope for a slip-up from City on Monday and beat Wolves on Sunday.
