Liverpool were fantastic this season and hugely unlucky to miss out on the Premier League after winning 97 points.
It’s widely ackowledged that the signings of Virgil van Dijk and Alisson made a big difference to Jurgen Klopp’s side and the question now is how can he take them to the next level.
One signing that would surely do that is 19-year-old Ajax skipper Matthijs de Ligt. He wowed in the Champions league semi-final against Tottenham and is one of the football world’s most wanted men.
He’s also the international centre-back partner of van Dijk and the thought of them teaming up for Liverpool too is a mouthwatering one.
That’s why Liverpool fans should be in dreamland after the four words mentioned by respected Spanish journalist Guillem Balague.
Talking on the BBC’s Football Daily podcast Liverpool have “been talking to him” about a potential move this summer amid reports that his move to Barcelona has stalled.
It might be a long shot. If he’s having problems getting a move to Barcelona done over wage demands then Liverpool might well struggle too.
But what a signing he would be. The fact that he’s doing what he’s doing at just 19 is incredible.
At that age van Dijk was just making the step up from the FC Groningen Under-21s side and it was another two years before he moved to Celtic for £2.7million.
At 19-years-old, de Ligt is a full international and one of the most wanted players in the world. He’s already a commanding presence and will only improve.
In terms of his future, what better place than at Liverpool, next to van Dijk?
It might be fantasy football but Balague is a very respected source and if he says Liverpool are having talks then there’s a chance.
And it would be a signing that could easily take Liverpool up to the next level – and that’s winning the Premier League.
