Watford goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes shared that he thought Tottenham had made significant progress since he exited the club in 2014.

The Hornets goalkeeper, who spent six years at Spurs, shared that when he was at the London club he was told to calm down by the press staff due to publicly stating in interviews that he wanted to win trophies.

Gomes added that Spurs were a very good club at that time before delivering a one-word verdict on the amount of progress they had made since to improve by saying “huge.”

“I had said in interviews I want to win trophies but the press staff were saying for me to calm down, that the club is only growing,” said Gomes in an interview with the Daily Mail.

“It was a very good club then and look at them now. Huge.”

OPINION

It’s so odd that Gomes had to be told to effectively keep his trophy ambitions at Spurs under his hat when at the club, as what fan doesn’t want to hear a player be confident about their side. While Tottenham fans at that time were no doubt aware their side faced an uphill battle to win silverware, it’s not like it was an impossible ask. However while Gomes had to reign in his views when at Spurs, he doesn’t have to steer away from showing his confidence now he doesn’t play for the club. The experienced shot-stopper clearly believes Spurs have fulfilled their potential by simply saying “huge” and are now a level above being just seen as a very good club. Obviously Spurs need to still prove themselves in the eyes of some as they’re yet to win a trophy with their current squad, but they have a golden opportunity to do that by beating Liverpool in the Champions League final.
