Former West Brom forward Garry Thompson has taken to social media to slam Baggies’ chief executive Mark Jenkins after the club’s recent decision regarding Dwight Gayle.

According to the Chronicle, West Brom have pulled the plug on a permanent deal to sign the 28-year old as the club can’t afford to keep him after failing to make their return to the Premier League.

Luke Dowling, West Brom’s technical director spoke to the Birmingham Mail, saying: “No-one would like to keep Dwight more than myself.

“Financially, we were prepared to pay the money for Dwight’s contract for this season. It hasn’t worked out (because we didn’t win promotion).”

Thompson has expressed his frustration regarding the way that the club is being ran, and put Jenkins on blast from his personal Twitter account, saying: “Don’t think Jenkins wants anyone with any semblance of football knowledge or even common sense,

“The Gayle situation is mad he wants £55k pw,

“I’m being dumb here but he will get 20/25 goals at this level with decent bodies around him= playoffs at worst and potentially £100 mil.”

OPINION

Arguably, the former Baggies attacker has a valid point. Gayle is thought to be on a wage of £40,000-per week (Source: Spotrac) and although this would make him one of the higher earners at the club, it would be worth it because of what he brings to the table. The 28-year scored 24 goals in all competitions this season for West Brom, whilst being on loan from Newcastle, and was no doubt one of the key factors in their promotion push, which was eventually cut short at the hands of Aston Villa. However, as Thompson said, surely Gayle should have been a priority for the Baggies going into the new season, as he is a proven goalscorer at Championship level and has already shown that he works effectively in the system in which West Brom are trying to play. He could potentially be the difference between the club earning a place in a promotion spot next season again, and them getting nowhere near a promotion spot for years to come.
