Adrian Durham took a dig at West Ham attacker Andy Carroll after the club confirmed he was set to leave when his contract expires.

The broadcaster sarcastically asked if he was worthy of the Hammers’ Hall of Fame before highlighting that based on what coaches have said, the player didn’t have the right attitude.

Durham did admit however that he previously deemed Carroll to be the real deal when seeing him in action in his early days when featuring for Newcastle United.

“Do you think he’ll get a place in West Ham’s Hall of Fame? Maybe just edge out Geoff Hurst or Bobby Moore.. I don’t know,” said Durham on talkSPORT (Wednesday May 29th, 16:06).

“I don’t think so, I don’t think so.

“I remember seeing him in those early days in the Championship and Premier League with Newcastle, I thought he was the real deal and he previously was talent wise but there are plenty of his coaches from along the way that will tell you that he didn’t have the right attitude.”

OPINION

The Hammers’ official website confirmed on Wednesday that Carroll alongside Adrian, Samir Nasri and Toni Martinez would leave the club in June when their current deals expired. While Nasri, Adrian and Martinez are noteworthy exits for a variety of reasons, it’s Carroll’s name that jumps out. The 30-year-old has been at the Hammers since the 2012/13 season, he originally joined on loan, and has played 142 times for the club. For many years Carroll was clearly the Hammers’ first-choice forward when available, but injuries stopped him from featuring more often. While Carroll has not been useful in recent times, particularly in his 2018/19 campaign, there was no need for Durham to kick him out of the Hammers door. The 30-year-old can’t help the fact he is injury prone and he deserves some respect ahead of what will be a difficult period of time for him. Carroll is going to struggle to find a new club due to his injury record and age, so why did Durham have to disrespect him with a cheap Hall of Fame gag.
