Leeds loanee Samu Saiz has been released without charge, according to BBC journalist Adam Pope.

This follows a huge story breaking on Tuesday, that involved a ring of arrests for match-fixing in the first two tiers of Spanish football.

Spanish outlet 24h initially reported that Saiz had been arrested but another Spanish outlet AS claimed the Leeds star was just “under investigation”.

Saiz gave a statement to the police on Tuesday and has now been released.

OPINION

This gives Leeds fans reason to be cautiously optimistic after a potentially damaging story. There’s no suggestion that Leeds would have suffered any sanctions over this – Saiz was on loan in Spain and all the allegations of match fixing are in the Spanish leagues – but it could have had a major impact on selling him this summer. Money is tight at Elland Road and Victor Orta needs every penny he can get to bring new faces in. It might be hard to sell Saiz while he’s under investigation but this is a significant update and it could lead to him being totally exonerated. Saiz has no career left at Leeds and Getafe aren’t taking up the £6million option on him. At this rate, Leeds would be happy to get half of that and the £3million could bring in a very good Championship player. This won’t be the last we’ve heard of this story though.
